چکیده
γ-Aminobutyric acid type A receptors (GABAARs) are GABA gated heteropentameric chloride channels responsible for the adult brain’s primary inhibition. In specific brain cells, such as in hippocampus, one of subtypes GABAARs, δ subunit containing GABAARs (δ-GABAARs), is predominantly expressed and located extrasynaptic or perisynaptic positions. δ-GABAARs mediate a slow constant inhibitory current called tonic While inhibition critical excitability single neurons, accumulating data suggest that function broader includes an integrative role network oscillations. these open new horizons on neurobiology δ-GABAARs, complexity continues to challenge analysis their subtypes. This review will summarize knowledge molecular, cellular physiological characteristics during health disease.

Stoichiometry of δ subunit containing GABAA receptors
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although the stoichiometry of the major synaptic αβγ subunit-containing GABAA receptors has consensus support for 2α:2β:1γ, a clear view of the stoichiometry of extrasynaptic receptors containing δ subunits has remained elusive. Here we examine the subunit stoichiometry of recombinant α4β3δ receptors using a reporter mutation and a functional electrophysiological approach...
متن کاملPerimenstrual-like hormonal regulation of extrasynaptic δ-containing GABAA receptors mediating tonic inhibition and neurosteroid sensitivity.
Neurosteroids are endogenous regulators of neuronal excitability and seizure susceptibility. Neurosteroids, such as allopregnanolone (AP; 3α-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-20-one), exhibit enhanced anticonvulsant activity in perimenstrual catamenial epilepsy, a neuroendocrine condition in which seizures are clustered around the menstrual period associated with neurosteroid withdrawal (NSW). However, the mo...
متن کاملExtrasynaptic α6 Subunit-Containing GABAA Receptors Modulate Excitability in Turtle Spinal Motoneurons
Motoneurons are furnished with a vast repertoire of ionotropic and metabotropic receptors as well as ion channels responsible for maintaining the resting membrane potential and involved in the regulation of the mechanisms underlying its membrane excitability and firing properties. Among them, the GABAA receptors, which respond to GABA binding by allowing the flow of Cl- ions across the membrane...
متن کاملδ Subunit-containing GABAA receptors are preferred targets for the centrally acting analgesic flupirtine
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The Kv 7 channel activator flupirtine is a clinical analgesic characterized as 'selective neuronal potassium channel opener'. Flupirtine was found to exert comparable actions at GABAA receptors and Kv 7 channels in neurons of pain pathways, but not in hippocampus. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Expression patterns of GABAA receptors were explored in immunoblots of rat dorsal roo...
متن کاملAltered gamma oscillations during pregnancy through loss of δ subunit-containing GABAA receptors on parvalbumin interneurons
Gamma (γ) oscillations (30-120 Hz), an emergent property of neuronal networks, correlate with memory, cognition and encoding. In the hippocampal CA3 region, locally generated γ oscillations emerge through feedback between inhibitory parvalbumin-positive basket cells (PV+BCs) and the principal (pyramidal) cells. PV+BCs express δ-subunit-containing GABA(A)Rs (δ-GABA(A)Rs) and NMDA receptors (NMDA...
